Sign Language

Recently Team 17 members discovered an article in a School Journal about sign language, and because everyone was so interested we decided to learn more about it.
Below are videos of some of our students trying out their own sentences in sign language. They are saying "Hi, my name is ______. I like playing ______."

Nick

Sam

Vivek

Bernadette

Eugene and A.J

Jan and Henrica introduce themselves and sign 'sing' "We Wish You A Merry Christmas."

What do you think of our sign language, can you understand it?

  2. These videos are fantastic. I hope you are enjoying learning sign language. Now with your videos you are teaching us too!

I highlighted your post in my Daily Digest of Education related blogs today as I thought other teachers would find it of interest. You can see it here: http://bit.ly/bRHX3G

  3. Eugene and AJ made the signing look like a new dance! I wish I knew how to sign back, languages was never something I was too good at. Now your students can talk to each other silently when you have your back turned!

  4. Thanks for taking the time to reply on my blog. I really enjoyed watching the videos of you using sign. I work with a special school that uses makaton - a kind of basic sign language - to improve communication for autistic children who find it difficult to communicate by speaking. It makes a huge difference to how much they are able to interact.

I hope that as a class you enjoyed learning some sign and that you'll go on to learn some more. It's a valuable skill (and means you can talk without getting told off for making too much noise in the cinema ;-)

  6. Well done Team 17! Being able to use sign language (even the basics) will really come in useful. I learnt when I was a head teacher & had a class of hearing impared children in my school. I'm amazed at how quickly an expert can 'talk'!
