Garden Club Harvest Sale

Our Garden Club harvested all our vegetables and herbs, then our member helped sort and bundle the vegetables and herbs. We were amazed by how much our garden produced. Our sale was very successful and we raised $150.00 for the 2011 school garden club.

Pearl- Being in the garden club was really fun because we get free vegetables and I love getting my hands dirty.

Shradha - I really enjoyed being in the garden club because we got free vegetables.

Catherine-I love to be in the Garden Club because we get a bit dirty and harvest the food.

Sheetel- I loved how we got our hands dirty and gardening is good for the summer

Sharnika - Being in the garden club was a lot of fun because we grew lots of vegetables and had our biggest harvest which we made over $100.

Team 17 wish you a merry Christmas and have a fun, safe holiday.

Swim-a-rama

On the 9 of December our class went to Swim-a-rama (swimming.) It had the Hydro Slide, Commando course,diving and normal swimming pools plus a playground.
What we had to bring:
-Togs
-Water Bottle
-2 towels
-Lunch
-Morning Tea
-Uniform
-Goggles

We had a lot of fun and we wish we could stay there forever.

Kayaking

In kayaking we learnt how to paddle a kayak with paddles. It was easy but Kiu's left shoulder got sore. Some people fell out a lot: Steven-5; Kiu-5; Isaiah-4; A.J-1; Nick-9 times.
During kayaking we learnt how to change direction using the paddle and we played games.

My most fun moment was trying to climb over people to swap kayaks.
It was also cool and fun because we also got to jump off the kayak. I loved jumping in the water because it was hot day. By Kiu,Nick,AJ,Steve,Isaiah

Garden Club Harvest Sale

On the first day of summer The Garden Club harvested their fresh meadow green silver beet.

Mr.Wood took them to the teacher's staff room so we could sell them to teachers and raise money, so the next time we grow our garden we could afford to buy seeds to keep on the fantastic progress.

They have been growing for 7 weeks and we have decided to harvest them. So that the next time they are fully grown (in week ten) we will harvest it again and hopefully it would be a lot bigger.

I would just like to thank all the Garden Club members for making sure the garden is always watered and healthy as it is their responsibility.

Why we blog

Today we got a question from a university student in Germany who wants to use our blog as an example to show her teacher. She had some questions for us and we answered her in this blog.

When did we started blogging?
We started blogging in the beginning of the year. We first had just a class blog that we all added to. Now we also have our own blogs.

Why did we started blogging?
We wanted to learn more about the internet and e-learning. We are also able to share our writing and learning with our families and the world.

Do we like blogging?
Yes!!!!
We do like blogging it's really awesome, we love writing our own blog. And we love reading and commenting on other class blogs. We really like getting comments.

How we use it? Our teacher (Mr. Wood) made us our own personal blogs and the class so we just log in and write a blog post about our learning or our own interests. We always put something about what we are learning each week on the class blog.

What we don't like about blogging?
We don't like it when we write a whole big paragraph and when we write the same thing on the blog it looks really short.

Will we continue blogging when we're older? Most of us promise we'll keep blogging.

How To Make A Quill Pen

On Monday the 29 November, a student named Mapili, who made a Quill Pen by followed these steps.

Step 1: Find a large feather and ink.

Step 2: Cut the Quill diagonally ( an angle ) .

Step 3: Dip the Quill into the ink well.

Tip:
Dab the Quill on a spare paper to prevent blobs.

Step 4: Write gently and try not to smudge.

Vinegar Volcanoes

Vinegar Volcanoes
The Blog Dogs have done a volcano experiment like the one we read about in School Journal P2N2 2002, "Make a Volcano" by Jan Trafford this week. In small groups Team 17 compared them, and made 'Same / Different' T-charts of the two methods?

The group members choose roles of 'Narrator - Recorder - Actor - Supervisor' before planning their ingredients and method. Once they had set-up and practiced, ready were to record. The teamwork and cooperation in the groups was amazing.

Volcano experiment

Hi my name is Nicholas and we did an a experiment. In my group was Kiu, Sam and Isaiah.
first we got a bottle and painted it to make it look like a real volcano.

Secondly we put half a cup of baking soda and a few drops of food colouring. We got a camera and filmed Sam pour the vinegar, when he poured it in the volcano exploded and went everywhere.

The Best Volcano Experiment Ever

Our group had Shawn, Henrica, Mapili and Sharnika. We were doing a volcano explosion experiment. What we were trying to do is making a volcano explode using chemical reactions.

Our ingredients were:

A small bottle
A bit of baking soda
1/4 of a glass cup of vinegar
1/2 of warm water
3 drops of red food colouring
and scrapings from crayons.

We took a video and 2 photos on our experiment. We had to do an re-actment since we didn't press the record button long enough. But this time we had more explosion.

Today Team 17 made volcanoes.
We had to get into a group of three. The people in our group were Pearl, Akansha and Priyasha.

How to make a volcano is to, get all the stuff you need.

What you need are:
1. Baking soda
2. Bottle
3. Vinegar
4.Measuring cup
5. Red food coloring
6. People

Steps
1. Get a bottle
2. Half fill bottle with baking soda
3. Pour it in the bottle hole
4. Few drops of food coloring
5. Mix with half cup of vinger
6. Pour over it with baking soda
WATCH IT EXPLODE.

The Garden Club's First Harvest

On the 19th of November 2010 the garden club got their first harvest of silverbeet.

We had 20 big bundles of silverbeet. We still have some silverbeet growing as we harvested the big silverbeet leaves. We have such a big group and have a roster for each day, lunch and morning tea.

Each garden club member took home a bundle of silverbeet, and we gave one to our principal.

Today we went to the TVNZ6 Netguide Schools Multimedia Challenge awards at TVNZ building. We were finalists in the primary website design part.

We had to come to school at 8 oclock and left at 8:30 and we came back at 11:00.
It was cool shaking hands with Julia and Jeremy from TVNZ6. We also shook hands with Anne Tolley the minister of education. Jonathan Cotton gave us the prizes, our prize were MONOPOLY City 3D and $100 gift vouchers from Warehouse Stationary.

Bailey's Got Culture Festival

Today we have just had our culture festival. Yesterday we had a dress rehearsal and the dress rehearsal was so cool. Here is the second half of the performance photos.

Our bird feeder

Cisco, Sheetel, Shradha and Catherine made a birdfeeder. Shradha took the photos, Sheetel and Catherine mixed the peanut butter and seeds, and Cisco shoved the mixture into the pine cone.

If you want to make a birdfeeder this is what you need:
-seeds
-pine cone
-peanut butter
-string

Once you got your things ready, you can start making your bird feeder
1. First mix your seeds with the peanut butter (make sure you get plenty of seeds.)
2. Once you mixed the mixture, get the pinecone and shove the mixture in ( get them right in so it gets tricky for them to eat.)
3. Get the piece of string and tie it tothe pinecone.
4. Tie the pinecone ( that is being held by the string) to a tree ( the highest you can go)
5. Just wait till you get some birds coming to your birdfeeder ( this might take a while, like days)

And you are done . This is a slide show while we were creating the birdfeeder.

These 2 weeks have been amazing we have lots of plants and the plants have grown so big. Now we also have eatable flowers called marigolds. We think that the silverbeet and beetroot has grown big. Myah and Catlin love watering the garden every Monday.

TVNZ6 NETGUIDE SCHOOLS MULTIMEDIA CHALLENGE 2010 FINALIST LIST

Team 17 teams worked hard in term 3 using the TEACH inquiry process to explore cultures. In teams they created wikis to show their learning. We entered the top three into the TVNZ6 NetGuide Schools Multimedia Challenge. They had a huge number of entries and the judges found the process of choosing winners very challenging.

So a HUGE congratulations is due to Priyasha, Akansha and Sheetel for becoming finalists in the TVNZ6 NetGuide Schools Multimedia Challenge. They created a wiki about Indian culture. Well done girls, you have made Mr. Wood, Team 17 and Bailey Road School very proud. You girls rock!

Today was our first Garden Club meeting.. Everyone is giving up one of their lunch times to help work in our vegetable garden. Thank you Talo (our caretaker) for making this wonderful garden space for us.
We planted: tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, silverbeet, beetroot, beans, zucchini, butternut, celery, chives, and parsley. We also planted three edible flower types: calendula, marigold, and nasturtium.

Cyber Bullying

Cyber bullying is when your write something or text something mean. The equipment they use is a phone or computer.

Anyone could be a cyber bully, even your friends could be one too. The reason why they bully you is maybe because they are jealous or they just want to be mean.

For the victim he/she might feel sad, weird or they might even cry, plus they might want to be alone.

Things that I would do is go and tell my parents or the principal because they will help you.

Culture Masks

For technology this term we studied masks from different cultures. We explored how they were made, what made them unique and their cultural patterns. After that we designed four draft sketches and finally created a full colour drawing. Eventually the long process began as we drew the designs on with pencil, which was harder then doing it on paper. Some people painted their background first and others filled them along with the designs. Then we painted many layers of fill and outline to get strong colour.

See our last blog post about how we weaved flax which many have added to their mask. We did a self-reflection using a rubric and have blogged our mask photos on our own kidblogs.

Inanimate Alice

After a term of exploring the digital stories of 'inanimate Alice' all our groups finished their stories this week. We peer-assessed each others work then gave the groups time to work on our feedback. Today we watched all the 'inanimate Alice: Samoa' digital stories created in PowerPoint. You can see our learning journey on our Inanimate Alice wiki.

Steven, Nick and Isaiah who created the one below were voted the as for creating most exciting digital story that included all the 'inanimate Alice' elements. Well done boys!

We uploaded the PowerPoint to SlideShare, however all the music, sound effects and interaction has been lost in the process. We may provide the original file as a download at a later date.

Weaving Flax

On the 20th of September we were weaving flax. First we read a article in the School Journal. The story was about weaving flax. When we finished reading we went to the native plant garden to get flax to weave and put on our mask. When we got there Mr Wood showed us the mother, father and grandparent leaves. Then we had to say a Karakia (Prayer). Mr Wood then started cutting the flax. We each got 2 flax leaves. We went back to the class ready to turn flax into flowers. When we finished making them we stuck them onto our cultural identity masks.

Inanimate Alice

Over the past 2 week Team 17 from Bailey Road Primary and Intermediate school have been making their own episode 5 of Inanimate Alice: Samoa. We chose Samoa because many of our class are Samoan and we also did some class research about Samoan culture. 

We have 6 groups for this challenge and we are still working on this challenge. We have already finished writing the scripts, getting sounds, writing the scripts on the slides, deciding who does what for the PowerPoint. 

So far we are working on inserting sound, transitions, special effects and images. We are also adding the finishing touches. We will be sending all our digital Alice stories to Ian Harper the producer of ‘inanimate Alice’ and Mr Wood is going to enter the best Alice story into the Makeup awards.

Sharnika Plants a Tree

When I went to KIP camp I did gardening and planted broccoli in the vegetable garden. It was fun.

I got a pahutakawa tree for our school and this is a photo of me planting it in our native tree garden. Sheetel, Vivek and my teacher helped dig the hole. Vivek took the photos and Sheetel helped hold things.

AFL and cricket

Yesterday we played cricket and the game we played was batting the ball in the middle of cones you get 12 points. We learnt a skill about how to hold a bat and bat it. We learn another skill called hit the ball and bat it like a paintbrush.

On Wednesday we had AFL coaches and we played handball. We learnt to pass the ball by holding in in one hand and hitting it with our other fist on the x.

Netball Winners

This trophy was given to us by Oranga Netball because we won all of our games. We were hoping that we could win this too, and win did!

Museum Trip

On the 24th of August we went to Auckland Museum. We went to see patterns and learn about different cultures.

First Sid showed us the Pataka. A Pataka is a old moari fridge. It usually has a few taniwhas on the outside to protect the food. The Pataka we looked at had 12 taniwha. Sid told us that only children under 7 were allowed to enter but first they had to recite their family history.

On the 19th of August 2010 we had our school disco. The dico was awesome. My favourite part was the time we got into a big circle and had a dance competition "GIRLS VS BOYS" it was awesome.Though we didn't have a judge!!!. Anyway a boy named Alamain did a cool dance and we recorded his dance hope you enjoy watching it.I bet all of us had fun!and I hope you enjoy our photos.

Maori Langauge

During Maori Language week we posted videos of us using Te Reo Maori. One of our board members is Maori and reads our blog. Matua Max visited our class to congratulate us on our blog and help us correct some Maori grammar mistakes. Thank you Matua Max for helping us learn.

The TVNZ6 NETGUIDE SCHOOLS MULTIMEDIA CHALLENGE 2010
The net guide challenge is a challenge to see the best website and animation for 2010. For primary schools a class can enter or three students as a team.

Every Thursday we learn a little bit more about the challenge and websites. Mr Wood is certain that one of the group will win in the challenge. We looked at 2009 winners and we think they are really good but we hope we'll be better. GOOD LUCK TO US ALL!

Our Class Cultures

Our class was trying to find out how many people we have in each culture. On Monday we gathered up the results of our cultures and put them into a online bar chart.

Clean Hands

We were trying to find how much bacteria was on a washed and unwashed thumb.

You first wash your thumb finger then get the agar plate and put the unwashed thumb on the agar plate and put your washed thumb on the other side of the agar plate.

Mr Wood took the agar plate to a scientist and he put it in an incubator. It has green spots like grass circles on the agar plate and a little bit big and on the unwashed side because I did not wash it properly for 20 seconds and dry it for 20 seconds.

You can wash you hands if you are having lunch or something to eat. You wash them for a minute with a lot of soap and after that dry it for 1 minute.

Inanimate Alice

In class for literacy we are learning about Inanimate Alice. We read and watched episode 1 China.

First we read the first page of the print then we came up with questions for the next page. We talked about what it means and thought that 'in' from inanimate meant opposite. Some people said it might mean not a cartoon Alice. Here is a photo of some of our questions.

The next day we watched the digital version with sound. Some of our questions were answered, for example who is Brad. We also discussed what the differences were between the digital and print versions. We asked which one was better and why? We made a T chart to collect this information.

For maths that day we made a feeling chart to guess what Alice was feeling in that episode. Here is Kakarikis feeling chart. The icons at the bottom are the pages and the faces are for the moods.

We still haven't finished learning about her and we predicted that in the next episode she will go either South, East or West because she was in the North and there are four episodes.

We watched 'Melville Intermediate - Learning Te Rakau in California, USA!' We have also just started learning rakau although some of our girls learnt last year so are becoming our experts.

Team 17 along with Moturoa and the Super Scoopers have been learning about rocky shores. Team 17 helped to come up with some question to make an online crossword puzzle. We will learn to make our own crosswords, and ways to ask the questions.

Our Canteen Menu

We put our canteen menu on our blog to compare it with Melville Intermediate School's menu here. Over the years Bailey Road School has been changing the prices in their canteen shop. Melville Intermediate School and Bailey Road Schools canteen shop prices have one thing in coomon, which is that some of their foods are healthier. The only disappointing thing about Bailey Road canteen shop is that one of their drinks called Sharing cannot be recycled. This is because New Zealand does not have the kind of machinery to separate the metal from the plastic.

Team 17 had been studying advertising and we decided we needed a logo for our class. The competition was on and we received many fantastic entries which are on our classroom wall. However after voting and class discussion Steven's design won the honor.

Our new logo for term 2 is on our wiki, blog, and as the desktop picture on our classroom computers too. Well done and thank you Steven.

We are very lucky to have been awarded as a Top Ten class blog by our friends Mrs Bee and the Super 7 Scoopers@St Clair and Mr Webb and Room 8 @ Melville Intermediate School from the 2010 blogging challenge.

We have learnt so much from following the blogs of other school and students. Each one inspires us and we love exchanging comments and communicating with one another.

Team Egg Drop Challenge

For the Friday challenge each team had to design a container out of the materials provided, which can be dropped from about 4 metres, but will not allow a raw egg in the container to break when it lands.
Materials:

• 4 sheets A4 photocopy paper
• 1 m string
• 1 A5 sheet thin card
• 1 m masking tape
• a plastic bag
• scissors (for construction only)

Team 17 had a surprise team challenge today. Using newspapers they built towers, each team trying to build the highest. Silver Stars tower won at 220cm. How high is that in metres?

The Year 6 Garden Club has explored gardening in term one. We have sprouted beans. We have dug compost in to soil, watered and feed the plants. Some we planted as seedlings and some, like radish and carrot, from seeds. All have grown so quickly. Luckily we have not had too many problems from caterpillars, snails and birds.

Trees get wasted and die.
Whales are killed by the Japanese.
Rubbish are thrown away on our streets and goes into rivers.
See levels are rising which mean small islands get drowned.
People polluting, animals get strangled and hurt.
Rivers getting polluted.
Tornados, cyclones and tsunamis are happening.
The more smoke that goes in the sky and that the shield out side of the earth will start to make a hole and Antarctica will start to melt and countries will start to be flooded, there’s all already a hole in the shield.
We all need to take good care of the environment in order to save the Earth!

We the Silver Stars are worried that pollution will destroy the environment.
People are dumping their rubbish anywhere, even the recyclables which should be in the recycling bin.
When cars and planes take off they release smoke and birds and animals start to die. Oil leaks also leave animals lifeless especially if they are put in rivers where animals drink so they will die.
Plastic could get stuck on them and the beautiful environment will not be beautiful anymore.

Sky Tower: it is a landmark of our city; you can bungee jump from the top; you can see the whole city from the top.
Harbour Bridge: you can see the city lights; you can walk over the top.
Cornwall Park: feed the animals; a big beautiful view.
Rainbows End: a amusement park with lots of rides.
Onehunga Bay: parks and swimming.
Bailey Road School: visit us and see how we learn.

How does our garden grow?

Our Garden Club is very excited by the success of our small patch. We take turns watering them daily and we look out for caterpillar eggs and snails. Last week we found the radishes and carrots we plated were growing too close to each other. This would stop them growing nice and big, so we pulled out some of the seedlings to give more space.
